It was cold and raining and Chrome wished she had brought more suitable clothing. The storm had come out of no where though, as they often did in June and she was stuck in her modified Kokuyo uniform, soaked to the bone.
Running errands for Ken and Chikusa was not going very well to say the least. Besides the sudden downpour she'd dropped half the stuff after tripping over a crack in the sidewalk. Half the food had been walked over and she hadn't been given enough money to go back and buy more. Chrome had gathered up what she could, and prepared herself for the lecture Chikusa would give her while Ken raged in the background.
It was beginning to get dark now, and Chrome had been lost in thought over what was going to happen. She hadn't noticed that she'd taken a wrong turn a few streets back until she should have been coming upon the entrance to Kokuyo Land and instead found herself in a suburban area.
"Oh..."
Now she'd be in even more trouble for coming back so late. She wasn't even sure where she was to begin with. Was she still in Namimori, or had she crossed over into Kokuyo? Where had she gone wrong? She turned around in a little circle to see if maybe that would help her figure out where she was. It didn't. The only thing she could do now was turn around and head back the way she came. Which she hoped was this way.
She hadn't gotten more than half a block down the road when suddenly the sound of rain became louder, yet she could no longer feel it. Glancing up she saw the inside of a large black umbrella covering her. She blinked once, then followed the handle of the umbrella to a pale hand in a black jacket up to a startlingly familiar face. Hibari Kyouya was sheltering her from the rain.
"Um... uh..."
"Follow me herbivore." He gestured with the umbrella and hesitantly she reached out to take it. He relinquished it once she had a firm enough grip on it and stalked on ahead of her. She did the only thing she could think to do and followed.
He didn't lead her far. Just back the way she'd originally been going and down a side entrance into a sub-division full of traditional Japanese style houses. Chrome was quite impressed with the neighborhood, it looked nice. She could easily imagine Hibari-san living in a place like this. There was a feeling of tranquility about it.
Following him into the house, she closed the umbrella and put it delicately into the holder right inside. The house was bigger than it looked from the outside, and Chrome was afraid to go any further, being dirty and wet. Without a word Hibari disappeared and returned a moment later holding out a large blue towel to her. She took it cautiously.
"I'll be upstairs. No one else his home. Remove your wet clothes and leave them in a pile at the door. Once you've completed that, come find me and I'll bring you dry clothes."
She nodded wordlessly and waited until he was completely out of sight before she complied. Leaning against the wall she removed her boots first. Unlacing the soggy laces proved to be a difficult task and pulling them off even more so. Her socks were much easier and fell onto the wood floor with a light thump. Glancing up to make sure that Hibari-san was really gone, she proceeded to unbutton her shirt and pull it off over her head. The sudden chill made her shiver and she wrapped the towel around her shoulders before sliding her skirt off. A moment later she had adjusted the towel so it was wrapped around her properly, covering anything inappropriate.
With a light blush she made her way further into the dark, quiet house. It almost felt as if no one lived here. It wasn't hard to find Hibari's room, the door was closed, but his name hung on a sign on the outside, as well as a little plaque that read "Head of the Namimori Disciplinary Committee." She stared at the door for a few moments contemplating just turning around and running back out into the rain.
Before she could make a decision though, the door opened and Hibari stopped suddenly to regard her.
"Um... I finished..."
Once more, without saying anythng, he'd just taken her by the wrist and pulled her into his room. She felt her face turn bright red, and really hoped that maybe he wouldn't say anything about it. Lucky for her, he didn't. He pointed at the bed and told her to sit, so she sat.
Hibari didn't have much in his closet for a girl to wear. It was mostly filled with school uniforms, denim, and leather. Eventually he tossed her an old school shirt, and an old pair of gym shorts he'd never worn.
"Change. I'll be back in a minute." He walked out without waiting for an answer.
The clothes were, of course, too big for her, but not in an inappropriate manner. If she buttoned the shirt all the way, it covered all the necessary parts and practically hung to her knees. She almost didn't need the shorts, which she pulled on anyway. They were a bit loose and hung around her hips, but they were dry, and much warmer than what she'd had on before.
Feeling a little more at ease Chrome took this opportunity to study the room. It was kept rather neat. There was a poster of Namimori Town up on the wall above his bed. Next to the well organized desk was a stand with a wodden perch for the little yellow bird that Chrome knew once belonged to one of Mukuro-sama's subordinates. She stood and padded her way to it. Hibird tweeted softly and fluttered his wings at her, making her smile. The bird seemed quite pleased with his new master, and looked to be taken care of.
The sound of the door closing behind her made her jump, and spin to face whoever it was. Of course it was just Hibari-san returning with a cup of hot tea. He didn't seem alarmed by her sudden movement, and she relaxed after a moment. Passing her the tea cup he picked the now wet towel up off the floor and threw it in the dirty laundry hamper.
"T-thank you." she mumbled from behind her teacup and he studied her for a second as if he might suddenly attack her before shrugging.
"If you had died out there it would have been troublesome for me."
"Oh... I don't think I would have died..." Gotten very sick maybe, but she wouldn't have died. She wasn't going to push her luck though. "I... I shouldn't stay too long. Ken and Chikusa will be expecting me back soon. I... have the groceries."
She thought she saw his lip curl briefly. "Nonsense. It would be foolish to go in weather like this. Until then, you'll stay here."
"Oh no... I-It's fine really. I appreciate you l-letting me dry off. But I should really g-go."
The look he gave her cut off her stuttering and any other argument she might have had. There was a beat of silence, before she asked if she could use the phone. Hibari pointed to the mobile on the edge of his desk and turned to walk out.
It took her a few moments to pick up the phone, but when she did, she dialed one of two numbers she knew offhand. They had one phone between the three of them at Kokuyo land, and Ken had it ninety percent of the time. The other ten, Chikusa had it. The only other number she knew was Reborn-san's incase she ever needed to get a hold of him in an emergency.
Ken picked up the phone demanding to know who this was. Chrome spluttered out an explanation about what happened, and that she wouldn't be back until sometime the next day. Ken, predictably, yelled and raged that that was unacceptable. All Chrome could do was apologize. Eventually he hung up on her, and she winced placing the phone back where she'd found it.
She stood in the center of the room for a few minutes before a clap of thunder outside startled her. She supposed if she was going to be staying here for the night she might as well find out where she would be sleeping. Exiting the room quietly she made her way through the empty house. Hibari was in the living room, lying on the couch, arms folded across his chest, eyes closed. She bit her lip. If he was asleep she didn't want to disturb him.
"What is it herbivore?"
She jumped. "Um... I-I was wondering where I was supposed to...sleep?"
"Obviously, I was going to let you have my room."
"I couldn't take your room from you!"
"No you couldn't. I'm letting you sleep in it. Now if you don't leave me alone I'll bite you to death."
"Uh...y-yes Hibari-san."
Slowly she headed back into his room. She felt strange, having a bed all to herself. Usually she was forced to sleep on the floor. It was nice though. Maybe Hibari-san wasn't such bad guy after all. Still a bit scary, but Chrome felt as if maybe she didn't have anything to worry about.
